A radical transformation of a dilapidated Edwardian semi-detached house, into a sophisticated and colourful family home.

Despite significant structural issues and subsidence, the clients saw potential in the property and set out to create a modern, light-filled, and highly functional home that prioritised space, flow, and family connection. Cousins & Cousins embraced this challenge, crafting a space that seamlessly blends functionality with playful design through a complete architectural rebuild, along with full interior design. Retaining only the original front façade, the project includes the excavation of a new basement and a full interior redesign.

A central design move involved repositioning the front door to create a strong visual axis from the entrance to the rear garden, anchored by a dramatic three-storey silver travertine stone wall and cantilevered staircase. This striking feature redefines the interior and connects each floor level with clarity and cohesion.

The open-plan ground floor supports family life and entertaining, while the new basement houses a playroom, cinema and bar. Bedrooms are located at first floor, with a guest suite tucked into the roof space.

Material choices balance durability with warmth, combining robust elements like steel and travertine with fluted timber, polished plaster, and soft natural textiles. Sustainability was also a cornerstone of the design philosophy. Cousins & Cousins’ interior design team meticulously selected sustainable, recycled and natural materials throughout the house. Furthermore, they proudly engaged local artisans where possible for the special finishes and bespoke joinery, ensuring not only exquisite craftsmanship but also supporting the community and reducing our environmental footprint.

The result is a layered, contemporary family home that blends architectural ambition with thoughtful, child-friendly design—and turns a neglected shell into a vibrant living space.
