Carlton Hill
We received planning permission to restore and extend this Grade II Listed home in north London. Dating from 1840, the property had fallen into serious disrepair and our proposal will bring it back to life with a series of sensitive interventions.
A frameless glazed extension to the rear will provide light and space to the occupants while respecting the heritage of the existing building. Careful refurbishment of the upper floors will restore the provenance of the existing building. Contemporary architectural additions to the lower levels, including a new basement level containing a gym, spa and wellness facilities, a music room and guest accommodation will bring the home into the modern world.
The new glass extension has been designed to be as lightweight and refined as possible as a counterpoint to the traditional rear façade. When standing at the end of the wild meadow garden, it will have virtually no impact on the views back to the existing architecture. A zinc roof will be made up of a cassette system so it becomes almost completely flat with no visible seams. The plan is to create an elegant structure that will complement the historic setting and stand the test of time.
Jelena Cousins, Director at Cousins & Cousins, said: “It’s wonderful to work on a building of this quality and so rare to find one in such disrepair that has remained largely un-touched since it was built. Although we relish the opportunity to bring it up to standard for the new owners, we are also tremendously cautious to respect the existing building, and we hope that it will become an exemplar of how to restore and extend listed homes.”
